Obere Flühgasse, Flühgasse, Zürich

I reserved a table at the restaurant Obere Flühgasse. The location is small but very cozy and probably one of Zurich’s cutest dining establishment. The menu is a bit difficult to read, since it’s a long list of individual pages but I manage. I order a mixed salad, a mushroom dish and the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes with Rösti. The mixed salad was pretty fantastic. Every component homemade and well dressed, a special notion is deserved by the cabbage salad which was paired with an incredibly smokey array of bacon bits.
The mushrooms were paired with scallions and celery stalks (Stangensellierie), perhaps a touch more salt would have been appropriate and some toast would have been nice. This way it was more like a serving of sauce in a small bowl. To answer the question right away, the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes was not the best one I ever had, the sauce was on the heavy side and might have been bound with a bit of corn starch. The rösti was well executed in terms of butter/potato/salt balance and crunchiness. It was a nice touch that it was served in two servings, this makes the dining experience just so much classier.
The pear sorbet with Williams was pretty fantastic, the sorbet even included chunky pieces of pear. Personally the food was good but not divine, but the cozyness of the dining room did it for me. The place to take your grandparents too or make a tough, german blonde woman feel comfortable enough to let her guard down (not that we’d be inclined to take advantage…).
