5 is located in Stuttgart and is a culinary experience opened by a former football player. The place seems to be doing pretty well, it did get a Michelin star, which tends to be a good sign. The appareance is pretty heavy headed, it creates the impression that a lot of time was put into a conceptual backdrop.

To get an impression of the culinary magnitute we order the five course menu, leaving of cheese and dessert. There’s quite a bit of skill visible here in the dishes, just looking at the somewhat intrinsic plating techniques, look at the beautiful plate which combines carrot with fish. The highlight was the ice cream made with foie gras and the afore mentioned playful assortiment of carrots. A letdown was the raw marinated scallop, covered in a foam, it just didn’t come together in terms of taste. Another detail which was lacking was the deer back, it was simply not cooked enough and woud have needed another 30 seconds or so in the pan. The wine flight and wine service were both excellent, if you didn’t like the taste of the test sip of wine, they’d get you another one without even batting an eyelid.

Five is very german in its nature, it’s a restaurant which appeals more to your mind than your gut. Presentation is certainly one of the strong points as well as the skill of the kitchen. There are some of the dishes were less is sometimes more, reducing the complexity of the plates would. Pricewise it’s pretty much at the top of the food chain.
