Rössle, Rottweil, Germany

A trip to one of the most underdeveloped gastronomic countries in the world – Germany. The cliché is simple here, Germans only care about price, the restaurant which offers the cheapest meals, does the most business. We stop at Rottweil to grab a bite to eat and funny enough it’s Carnival (Fastnacht) and all the youths are drunk & wearing costumes at lunchtime.
We end up in a place called Rössle which was recommended to us by one of the youths as the best German place in town. Sure enough, the menu looks promising sporting liver and tripe among other dishes. The Maultaschen (a type of german ravioli) were okay (in the terms of being decent), the filling seemed to carry a bit of basil which was slightly offputting but otherwise fine. For a quick bite and a glance into German cuisine this certainly seems a decent place.
Strange in Rottweil is the fact, that some of the beautiful, historical houses in the inner-town have been overtaken by foreign restaurants. I just don’t understand why someone would run a chinese restaurant (the 5 Euro for the buffet type) in such a location – this is where you’d want a nice, traditional restaurant serving regional specialities. Maybe there’s some credence to the cliché?

“Germans only care about price, the restaurant which offers the cheapest meals”: this is unfair! It might be true for the countryside, but as soon as you check out the german cities, you will get more than in many other countries: really good food, not cheap, very friendly staff (which is true for whole Germany). Just check out some italian restaurants in Berlin, and I think you will change your quote!
