Aurora on Banhofstrasse has replaced the Café Ernst and since the menu looked interesting, yours truly had to go and take a look. On a slightly different note, the menu was also sending some confusing signals, rather modern food coupled with classics which felt more like they were still from the Cafe Ernst. Also I wasn’t sure wether they were suspecting something or not. The amuse bouche I received was as big as an appetizer, just look at the three more than generous helpings of tuna tartare…

A modern and flavourful quail soup followed, served with a bit of flourish and the help of two waiters. The Onsen egg was good, I wasn’t too happy about the potato espuma which was really more mashed potatoes than anything else. Sweetbreads and scallop followed, no complaints there either. Dessert was a nice small portion and the chef’s interpretation of “winter”.

Overall the restaurant Aurora did feel a bit confusing, it’s trying to combine a modern, casual Café with modern fine dining dishes. It feels like trying to serve too to many different types of customers instead of focussing on just one. There’s a feeling that the dining room and the menu are not one cohesive conceptual thing. I would prefer a more posh & sophisticated interior to go with the food. But then again, what do I know about interior design…
