While our favourite dining publication prides itself on finding new locations on gentrified Langstrasse and Europaaallee, yours truly has a tight knit network of insiders. The truffle swines of dining excitment are constantly scouring Zurich and at the smallest wiff of something good, a tag-team of battle hardened diners swoop in to bring you a report from the frontiers of dining.

Restaurant Damas is a shining example of a place which is run by an owner with a strong sense of passion, dedication and a mission of bringing his childhood food to Zurich. After running one of my favourite bars (which I can’t name since I prefer to avoid all the female attention while enjoying my favourite drink “Gran Smash Classico”) he moved on to this establishment. While one might miss the retro-chic of “Carla’s Schwanenbeizli” the tastefully decorated interior is very welcoming. The menu plays off the traditional cooking of the near east. Some pita bread croutons and small, very tasty olives are served while we study the menu and we settle on a plate of Fatousch and a “Best Of” selection platter. I was blown away. The Fotousch wasn’t my taste (too fruity and sweet of a salad sauce), but the rest was mind-boggling. Superbly fresh, very nicely balanced flavours, tart and clean is what you get when biting into the food. Pita bread is excellent, the Hoummus and Mouttabal (a cleaner, simpler Baba Ganoush) were superb, nice meat skewers (beef and ground lamb/veal) paired nicely with the Tabbouleh and small salad. You grab some pita bread, stuff it with the ingredients and every bite made us happy. I don’t like the word authentic, but I guess here it’s called for. I’m trying to take it down a notch, but… best thing – the place is cheap. Falafel in a pita bread in a real restaurant for 10 CHF ? New Point is more expensive… Damas – strong recommendation for an unpretentious, good & very fairly priced meal.

Speaking of savoury relationships and money – there’s a book I’d like to recommend to my beloved readers, it seems great if you want meet men in their 60ties…
