The Haus der Freiheit is a rather interesting place. It’s owned by a well know political figure and is up the hill a good 25 minute walk from the Krummenau train station. If you call from your office (with supressed Caller ID), the gentleman on the phone is rather gruff. Once he realizes you’re not calling to abuse Toni Brunner, he’s all charm.
The strenous march made us thirsty and hungry. We were looking forward to honest cuisine. First of all I was slightly skeptical. Why would a restaurant well-known for being owned by national politician have decent food ? Toni Brunner was sitting at the big table, discussing with the local SVP chapter and offering opinions on the European Union,
The most striking feature in this small restaurant is an industrial strength dry-aging cabinet which is filled with different cuts of meat. Something rather unusual to find in a place like this. The appetizer we chose was great, and truly aimed at making males on a stag night happy. A big grilled chunk of bacon with garlic dipping sauce. It looked great and tasted great.
The meal continued in the same manner. We all went for the mixed grill plate, which came with Bernaise and BBQ sauce, side dishes. The plate for two consisted of an entrecote, a veal and a pork chop. The flavour was rich and you could sense the deep aroma of the dry-aged meat. The side dishes were honest and delivered on their promise, the sauces homemade and tasty. Our dinner ended with a homemade Schlorziflade.
Since this was a stag night, dining at the house of freedom seemed very fitting for one of his last nights as a bachelor. Toni Brunner was equally impressed and offered a round of Enzian. He also made a superbly, funny joke, but since this isn’t the Geri conspiracy we’ll refrain from sharing. We spend the rest of the night playing poker (even the waitress joined in) and retreated to the rooms on the upper floor eventually.
Honestly – the value you get at this place is fantastic. Food was truly satisfying, the place a lot of fun, we spent half the night drinking and for the six of us only paid 600 CHF. We’ll be back for our next men’s weekend.
