I was unsure what to make of George Grill in the Ober house where the Casino sits. Quite frankly the concept is confusing (and no this doesn’t mean it’s avantgarde). The idea of this place is that it’s a ficitional character’s appartment / bar / place of living / … who happens to be named George (pronounced the English and not the German way). Just looking at the website, you’re taken on a virtual tour through a party and everyone addresses the camera as George. The interior is all nicely done and oddly it reminds me of Piz Gloria, the fictional mountain top abode in James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

To cut to the chase it’s a decent steakhouse. The schmalz and bread seletion was good, I liked my hering and the meat was of good quality. I always like a big selection of side dishes and while my partners liked the truffle fries I enjoyed the beans more. One key takeaway was that the smaller meat cuts are more than enough unless you’re superbly hungry or have skipped appetizers. A nice touch were the small selection of desserts fairly priced at 6 CHF. If you cut through George’s whatever, the restaurant scores points with decent food and is a safe bet for meat. One side effect is if you try diving into the concept that your head spins without you having had an alcoholic beverage 🙂

  1. hi Real Picky, was that bill for three people, for lunch? Worth it?

    • Three people (incl. ample supply of wine) – if you’re having bread and appetizers, then a smaller “lady cut” is more than enough. Not cheap, but it was worth it.

  2. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback — very helpful.

Incidentally, Mr. Bart insisted on trying the boucherie AuGust on Rennweg last night because your recommendations are failsafe. He was actually disappointed (one modest slice of pork filet in dough for 41 Sfr), but I thought it was great (meatloaf, mash, and beans).

    George is next…

    • Interesting – I didn’t like the meat loaf (Fleischkäse) even though it was from Keller at AuGust. Honestly I’m not sure I’d order pork filet in dough at a restaurant, that’s the classic Party Filet of Betty Bossi fame and super simple to make yourself. Proper Beef Wellington might be something different 🙂
