Sunday night and the Storchen was open for dinner. A quick drink at the nicely tucked away bar, after having passed a staffed coat rack (Garerobière) put us into a nice mood. Our table overlooked the Limmat and the Grossmünster. The first road bump in this otherwise pittoresque setting were the Grissini served as part of the bread selection, doughy, void of crunch and a tad stale.

The first course of the menu was a salmon with citruis fruits. The fish was lovely in taste and mouth feel, however the citrus and the christmasy undertone (cinnamon ? cloves ?) weren’t to my liking. Mixed feelings on the next dish, perfectly done potato mash but the advertised porcini flavour was missing and the red pepper corns distracting. Main course while the vea cheek and lobster tail were excellently prepared and tasty, againg the whole plate with a rather oddly tasting rice just didn’t come together.

Overall it felt a little disjointed – the initial positioning is clearly old school, fancy dining, but it’s more appearance than substance when looking at the food. I would have preferred slightly simpler but better executed dishes. Prices match the surroundings.
