Our plans were to see the play A1 Ein Stück Schweizer Strasse at the Schauspielhaus. Brainstorming where to get dinner we settled on the Le Dézaley. Apparently it’s been a restaurant since 1883 and by now one would expect they’d know what they’re doing. The le Dezaley is mainly know for Fondue and is featured in many tourist guides as a place to try out one of the Swiss national dishes.

First up was an appetizer of cold saucisson, which was okay. Main course was the pork chop “Dezaley” covered with onions, ham and cheese and slightly baked. The chop was overdone and dry, which for a signature dish certainly isn’t the right way to present your establishment. The roeschti which I had ordered as a side dish was bad. Soggy and lacking crunch it was a disgrace. My dining partner aptly noted that he’s eaten better in the Swiss Army and I couldn’t agree more. They did take the roeschti off the bill without asking. Still there was only one conclusion – the le Dézaley is a tourist trap. And who fell for it ? A certain someone with 30+ years of dining experience in Zurich… Shame, shame, shame on all involved parties!

But… the evening ended even worse; the play at the Schaushpielhaus was horrible. Yes the acting was good, how the actors mimicked the people shown in the short movies actually pretty great. However the loose collection of anecdotes around the highway were of dubious quality, some where a little bit funny, most of them rather pointless. Very irritating were all the repetitions, you’d get a short video and the actors would repeat what was said or vice-versa. Overall it lacked cohesion, it felt like someone tried to dig out some memories loosely based on the highway but failed to make them interesting.

Instead of a 90′ play, this could have been condensed into a 10′ Youtube video. No idea what the NZZ was smoking when reviewing this. So maybe I should feel comforted that my 68 CHF ticket was subsidized by approx 400 CHF by the tax payer ? Unfortunately no, the seat was simply too uncomfortable 😉

  1. I appreciate that you’re quit harsh with this restaurant. had a similar disappointment in this establishment.
but what I liked most is your review about the play. I think you use the same accuracy and simplicity by expressing your opinion as you do it with food reviews.

    • Getting Roeschti wrong in a “swiss” restaurant is like overcooking spaghetti at an italian place 🙂
