Stubä, Brauerstrasse, Zurich

I’ve been meaning to visit Stubä since I heard great things about it, but I guess I picked the wrong day. Service was out of touch. After sitting down, no one noticed me or brought me a menu, a drink was forgotten, I got a sandwich I hadn’t ordered, things didn’t arrive at the table together and I had to leave out the pulled pork burger since it never made it to the table before I had to leave. The style of the crew is “trés Zurich”, but I’m willing to chalk this down as a one time issue, since the place was pretty packed.

On to the food. The nachos were ok (maybe even homemade), but the guacamole (too sour) and cheese (bland) were disappointing. Slightly weird were the flowers on the place, not sure what they were supposed to add to the dish. I was now really looking forward to the Reuben sandwich I had ordered. But again it was disappointing, no taste, too much cheese, chewy meat and where was the sauerkraut ? Normally a Reuben sandwich is an explosion of flavour, this one wasn’t. To be fair, the bread was great. Nice crunch on the outside and slightly fluffy insides, excellent choice. Unfortunately the bread alone doesn’t make a sandwich.

When I asked for the bill I had noticed that they’d forgotton the one drink I got, but had added something I didn’t get. Price was roughly the same so I just raised it to the server’s attention and forked over a 100 CHF bill. Interestingly enough instead of making the call on the spot the waiter wanted to discuss it with his boss and walks out of the room with my 100 CHF bill still in hand… Now while I have no objections to his need to discuss with his boss, as long as a transaction isn’t completed, the money shouldn’t leave my sight. Long story short, cool interior, shaky service, average sandwiches.
