Meister Gao is a somewhat ill-located restaurant directly off the Bucheggplatz. Weird is that some signs still remind of a previous dining establishment called Buche. Now there’s not much in terms of exciting chinese dining in Zurich, most of places are what I’ve come to call matrix restaurants. In a chinese matrix restaurant, there’s typically 8 proteins and 10 sauces, hence giving you an 8×10 matrix of choices. In Meister Gao I decide to order the house specialities. First off are some ribs rubbed in garlic. Tasty, tangy with an obvious garlic flavour I like them. Also the Ziram lamb meat was nicely cooked and a non familiar flavour profile. The location and the interior are not really fascinating and the dishes I had didn’t quite wow me enought that I’d revisit for a dinner with a group of friends, but I’d stop by for lunch if I’m in the area.

  1. Service was very good given the fact that the hostess doesn’t utter three words of english, the ribs were good indeed, can use a bit of meat on them but the ginger and garlic kick give something to savour on, i had the green curry chicken a bit salty but overall tasty, the shrimp curry was a definite winner, prices quite decent for zurich, i do agree this is more of a lunch place but would also do for a weekday dinner by the patio without anything too fancy… thank you for the review… looking up to try the next recommendation. one entree, one salad three main courses with rice and four beers total CHF130
