Quaglinos, Dufourstrasse, Zurich

Quaglinos sits right behind the Opera House and is a quaint looking, french style Bistro. Not much happening shortly before Christmas, but seems cozy enough for a nice meal. The baguette wasn’t fresh, but at least the spread and the rustic presentation made up for that oversight partially. Next dish was a foie gras terrine with a slab of sauteed duck liver. The liver was overcooked and it wasn’t very good, but the terrine, apple and brioche were nicely prepared and tasty.
Onion soup is always a must have at a place like this, but left me slightly disappointed. The broth was too tomatoey, my partner in crime called it a good tomato soup and he was right, it just didn’t remind me of an onion soup. Also the bread and cheese should have been toasted more and showed off a little browning to give it that lovely roasted aroma. The veal ragout with white sauce was nice, especially the way the vegetables were blanched and a good main dish since it had enough sauce to go with the angel hair pasta. The place has potential, but some more attention to detail is in order.

Sorry to hear that! I have had several lunches there, they were always expertly prepared and well-priced (CHF 27.50). Delicious salad dressings. One time a Mistkratzerli, richly decorated with vegetables and three sauces. The only mishaps I remember were a delayed melty chocolate cake and a forgotten ball of ice cream. Another time they ran out of Wiener Schnitzel for lunch, and we were offered a decadently large entrecote instead, at the same price. The service is friendly and fast even when the place is packed. I can only recommend it!
