Burrito Brothers, Hardstrasse, Zurich

A Swiss company doing “California Style Mexican Kitchen” that sounds pretty fusion to me. Burrito Brothers originated in Lausanne and has branched out to Zurich into a little shop near Hardbrücke. It’s a very casual dining setting, you order at a counter either to go or to eat in at one of the approx. six tables. We were excited to see this type of establishment and queued at the register. To get a good feel we ordered a taco, a quesadillo and a burrito menu (which means it comes with nachos) for an early dinner.
The reference for Guacamole and Nachos in Zurich currently is the Bite near Langstrasse. The Guacamole and Nachos were almost as good, which for a super casual place and not a sit down restauranta is a good place to be. Everything else was okay, but didn’t rock our boat. Maybe I just don’t like Mexican food, then again the Swiss / Californian / Mexican might not score too high on the authenticity scale. Comparing the taco say to the ones at el Luchador they’re simply boring, lacking freshness and love. The same theme repeats itself in the Burrito and the Quesadilla. Some more brightness/acid/greenery to cut through the rather filling and heavy dishes would make them a lot better. The Quesadilla was a tortilla filled with a huge glob of cheese, it’s like eating a flat bread full of fondue. Sprinkling some spring onions / chillies or other elements to cut through the richness would have taken this dish to the next level. One compliment on the spicy salsa though, it tastes good and has a nice heat.
Summing up the experience it’s good enough for a low key dining establishment, but it fails seriously short on their self-acclaimed mission of transforming mission of “sparking a change in the Mexican style food scene in Switzerland”.

The food looks like snacks we would take with us in the cinema just to munch on something while watching but not for a sit-down dinner. Hubby and I are looking for new places to eat for our deserved dinner dates and this burrito place came up . However, after reading your review, it might not be my cup of tea.
It’s only been Mexikano at the Niederdorf for me when comparing it to Papa Joe’s and Tres Amigos. Any other recommendations for Mexican food seekers like us?

The one I like best is the el Luchador next to Hauptbahnhof – http://www.elluchador.ch/
