The legendary Schloessli closed, was refurnished and opened under new management including a Facebook page. The place still has the nice, covered garden terrace on the outside and has added decent looking tables on the inside. The restaurant has a small menu focussing on grilled meats and a small selection of fish. We’re the only ones eating here, it seems that in the off-days of the Euro 2012, people prefer to stay home. The first dish were some Crostini with fennel salsiccia. Nicely grilled crostini with fresh tomatoes and lovely piece of sausage. I loved the sausage and I thought this was a hearty and fun dish to start off a meal.

The burger sounded appealing and since I received an Weight Watchers PR package (really – why would you send a restaurant blog dieting stuff, that’s for frustrated ladies) a few days earlier I thought the pound (400g) size would do just perfect. The burger came in a foccacia bread & the usual toppings, as well as some house sauce. It needed ketchup (on the table) and I would have preferred a regular Brioche type bun. I did like that there were other sauces to choose from including a chipotle based one, which is a very US grill joint thing to do. The Stealth fries were pretty fantastic, even though they were a frozen product. They are rather large, soft and potatoey on the inside and nice and crunchy on the outside. The chocolate cheesecake wasn’t that good, lacking crumblyness on the dough and not having that mixture of fluffy and heavyness which goes into a perfect filling. I still like the place and I’m hoping they’ll do well. Next time I’ll want to try the Cote de boeuf, since that’s where you get to see a chef’s skill.

  1. Not that it really matters, but an avoirdupois pound (and I think we are talking about the USA, alias Hamburgerland, here) is 454 g. Continuing in the same vein, I doubt this product would be a success in Hamburgerland despite its hefty credentials. (“Foccacia with a burger? You must be joking!”)
Not saying I wouldn’t try it myself in the right mood, mind you…
But I am happy to go on record stating that I would never try a “Chocolate Cheesecake”. That’s simply wrong, and if it isn’t, I don’t want to hear about it!
