Orlando isn’t the best of cities if one is dependent on public transport or foot. Luckily the inner city spots a couple of restaurants and a vibrant bar scene easily accessible on foot. One night dinner brings me to Kres Chophouse a restaurant priding itself on being a progressive American chophouse, serving both steaks and seafood with a Mediterranean influence. The interior is like many steakhouses, catering more to the affluent establishment than the bourgeoise avant-garde. Two waiters act as serving staff, which is surprising at first but turns out to be one of them training the other. The onion soup wasn’t very successful, the taste was off and so was the seasoning. The shrimp cocktail was nicely done, even the house sauce was tasty, which often is a let-down in most other places. The star of the evening was the excellent rib eye steak with Mac’n’Cheese and spinach. I’ll never quite get into understanding why one would accompany meat with Mac’n’Cheese, but they were tasty and well cooked. One of the surprises was when I asked for the bill, the onion soup was deducted since I’d fairly pointed out what I didn’t like about it. I think this is commendable of a restaurant even though it leads to abuse, people claiming something’s wroing with a meal when they just don’t like it. Nevertheless the server got a decent tip (by american standards).
